Precise Election - through Vedic / Indian electional astrology

... by V K Shridhar

Election (Muhurt) has emanated from Vedas, Shaastras, Puraanas, Shrutis, Smritis, scriptures, and other canonical, religious & mythological holy books. It has withstood test of time for the last over two millenniums. Some of the students of electional astrology usually gets baffled when they find as to why 10.30 am has been selected to start an activity (say in taking oath by a minister), and why not 10.31 am. Logic of the electional astrologer may be known to him only, but here some of the important factors considered in selecting a precise Muhurt (election) have been detailed for the pleasure of electional astrologers.

Indeed, to cull out such a precise election is expertise of the specialist electional astrologers. Vedic astrology has been blessed by our sages through numerous electional treatises, laying down extensive rules & guidance: making this branch of Vedic astrology as the most useful & the most effective branch, for the benefit of humanity. To arrive at precise (Sukshama) election for a specific activity, following main factors are considered. It is difficult to dilate all the factors in a blog of this nature.

Horoscope (nativity) of the aspirant, his name, especially his birth ascendant, lunar sign (the radical Moon sign), lunar asterism, his status (social status, age, religion, caste), place where activity is to be performed, social & religious considerations; form the basis of an election.

Availability of universal purified time length, Panchang Shuddhi [suitable availability of fundamental five elements of Hindu ephemeris – day, asterism, half lunar day (Tithi), Karan & Yoga], Muhurt Yogas, selection of purified time (year, month, solstice, Lunar half, Hora).

Presence of specific “Muhurt Yogas” (specific combinations of weekday, asterism, lunar day, asterism transited by the Sun etc. – distinct from “Muhurt Yogas”) is hallmark of Hindu electional astrology. Combinations of the specific elements of Hindu ephemeris prescribed for the specific elections fortify an election. Exhaustive guidance has been given by exponents for initiation suitable works during currency of each of the said five elements of the Panchang.

Bright & luminous Moon lays foundations of an election. No good election is thought possible without detailed consideration of the Moon & asterism transited by her: as other planets gets strength from the Moon. The Moon is mind & the Sun is soul of the Muhurt.

Absence of universal malefic / prohibited time like – Gandants (junctional points), eclipses, solar ingresses into a new sign, Vishti Karan, Mahapaatas, Latta-Paata-Baana- Kartari: Dash Doshas, malefic Yogas, blind / deaf signs-months-Tithis, combustion of Jupiter & Venus, etc. etc.), malefic / poisonous Yogas (combination of astrological elements): the list is very long to mention here all these factors. Absence of malefic time for the doer – adverse transit of the Moon & radical significator of the event, adverse asterisms; adverse Ghaata (killer) ascendant, Tithi, weekday, part of the weekday, Month, Yoga, Karan etc. In addition current adverse Dasha / Anter Dasha (major / minor periods as per Hindu progression) as per various modes of reckoning is to be avoided.

Favourable transits of planets for the native selected through various systems – like Gochar, Ashtakvarga, Vaam Vedha, Karam Vedha, auspicious asterism, Ansha Chakra, Sarvaobhadra Chakra etc., favourable Dasha / Anter Dasha (major / minor periods as per Hindu progression), favourable transit of radical & event significators.

Extensive rules have been laid down to fortify & purify the election chart & election ascendant. Divisional charts, especially the divisional chart related to the event, requires examination & fortification. Strength of the planets is not only examined in the electional chart but also in the divisional charts (Shadvargas). Aspects of the planets their strength, strength of the election ascendant as well as event significator is examined by well established mode prescribed in Vedic astrology.

Specific styles of Muhurtas (elections) like ''Do Ghati Muhurt, Shivprokat Muhurt, Chaughadia Muhurt & Brihaspati Muhurtas'' are also in vogue. Even when universally auspicious Muhurtas like “Abhijit Muhurt” & “Sade-Teen Muhurt” are eulogized by the exponents, but their application to the individual in respect of specific election is ingenuity of the electional astrologer.

No election is feasible unless antidotes to the maleficence are available & the election is balanced by the specialist’s skill. He has to examine compliance to the laid down logics, purification of divisional charts; arriving at the precise moment to start the event for the best benefits of the aspirants explaining him the limitations & constraints, as perceived by him. The unsullied election – without any maleficence is the best but is rarely available. Next middling election, having more beneficence & less maleficence is at times used by specialist astrologer through his expertise after balancing the election & examining the antidotes. The election having lesser beneficence is used in emergency. Even Dushta (malefic) Muhurt is elected in case of emergency, but with careful selection of antidotes.

Some opine that “Sukshama elements” of the Panchang, other opine purification of divisional charts, some other opine specific degrees of election ascendant & the Moon / Nakshatra; hold the key in arriving at Sukshama election. Suitable propitiations, if required, may also be examined. Presence of favourable omens, absence of portents, proper Swar (mode of breathing), and incantation of Mantras & Vedic hymns, purified mind & body of the doer enhances certainty of success in the election.

AKSHAYA TRITIYA - MYTH & TRUTH

a discussion by author of “Hindu Electional Astrology

Every year when Akshaya Tritiya approaches, web sites and blogs are full to exploit the masses, since the latter have no direct accesses to the original dictums on Muhurt (election). More so by some Indian TV channels, of late, have been inducing fears in public minds whenever there is any unusual planetary combination or astronomical phenomenon. Some of their remedial measures were only known to them, thusfar.

Lord Vishnu is tutelary lord of this Tithi. According to Hindu mythology, this day is associated with pooja of Lord Vishnu, Tithi prevailing at the start of Treta Yuga (also called as Yugadi Tithi), Parshuram Jayati (incarnation of Lord Vishnu), Kuber Lakshami Pooja, pooja of Goddess Tulsi, the day Sage Vyasa began the composition of Mahabharata, Sudama’s visit to Lord Krishna in Dwarka, Balaram Jayanti….

In electional astrology, life activities are broadly divided in two categories, viz, spiritual / religious & worldly / materialistic activities. Akshaya Tritiya being one of the most powerful election (covered under Sade Teen Muhurt) according to Hindu electional astrology. – which covers beneficial elections in respect of religious activities; and not the latter. Punya Karmas (meritorious deeds) performed on the said Tithi yields manifolds beneficial effects.

This year third Tithi of Vaishakha (Shuddha) lunar month starts at 04.10 IST on 16th May, 2010 & ends at 02.31 IST on 17th May, 2010. It coincides with Mrigshira nakshatra starting from 01.18 IST on 16th, ending at 00.25 on 17th May. Currency period of Monday (from local Sunrise to local Sunset period) & Mrigshira results in “Sarvarth Siddha Yoga’, ‘Amrit Yoga’ & ‘Amrit Siddha’ Yogas – very beneficial & powerful Muhurt Yogas. Concurrency of adverse “Vidal Yoga’ does not diminish beneficial effects of the earlier said Yogas. Further, From 14th April to 14th May, 2010 Adhik / Mala Vaishakha Maas; by both Shukladi or Krishnadi mode of reckoning lunar months; shall be over before the forthcoming Akshaya Tritiya. Thus according to Hindu electional astrology, the forthcoming Akshaya Tritiya is very auspicious Tithi. The Sun & the Moon are not brightest during the current Tithi. Because of Mal Vaishakha Maas, the Sun & the Moon are in Taurus this time. Deep exaltation of the both planets is not astrological feasible on this Tithi. On certain Akshaya Tritiya; either of them in deep exaltation & other in exaltation sign with concurrency of beneficial Muhurt Yogas, would be a dream position for electional astrologers. Perhaps on such planetary position composition of Mahabharat was initiated by the sage Vaid Vyasa.

But there is a caution: no auspicious time is beneficial for all the persons for initiating all types of life activities. Muhurt is the most beneficial branch of Vedic/Hindu astrology, and only specialized in the field may be able to guide the individuals for specific Muhurt.

Certainly the forthcoming Tithi is very very beneficial for Punya Karmas. Donations, Poojas, Jap, Tap, Snaan, Havan, Homas etc shall, yield many fold beneficial effects. During currency of Yugadi and Manvadi Tithis prohibited activities are: Upnayana, marriage, ending of fast, house construction & entering thereof, travailing and plantation. In Muhurt treatises purchase of gold in not recommended during Akshaya Tritiya, so do not follow blindly. For Muhurt of worldly activities – do consult astrologer specialized in electional astrology.
